History

The organization was formed in 1984 as a result of community action to preserve the grounds of New York Hospital (now New York-Presbyterian Hospital) from a vast commercial development. Faculty and staff at the hospital (Concerned Citizens) joined with a local group interested in the conservation of open space (Committee for Open Space), and CCOS was born. With the able leadership of Ann Appelbaum, M.D., H. Donald Wilson, Carolyn Whittle, Ted Benjamin, Barbara Benjamin, Alan Teck, Carry Kyzivat, and current President Frances Jones, CCOS has over the years continued to provide information, research, funding, and support for the protection of open space in the City of White Plains.

CCOS is fiscally sponsored by the Open Space Institute, Inc., as part of its Citizen Action Program. CCOS is headed by a Board of Directors. It holds an annual meeting, holds public meetings on various topics related to open space in White Plains, and periodically publishes informational newsletters. CCOS’s membership is composed primarily of White Plains residents but is available to anyone upon payment of the annual dues (currently $35.00).
