Orchard Street

Keeping Orchard street property as open space:

Below is an image of a young Eastern Box Turtle. It is on the threatened species list in Westchester County and the City of White Plains follows that listing. This turtle was found in a residential area, in someone's window. It had washed in there during the storm and was trapped. Compare it to the size of a lens cap is 2 1/4 inches wide.

This is more proof that the proposed Orchard Street subdivision currently before the Planning Board should be turned away and the City of White Plains should find the means to preserve that property for perpetuity.

Be aware that the public hearing scheduled during the September Common Council meeting ( Tuesday after Labor Day ) to turn 5 parcels owned by the City of White Plains into parkland, currently includes only part of the Francis Place parcel, which is 50 feet from where this threatened species was photographed today. At that public hearing, the unbuilt "paper" street of the Francis Place parcel will not be considered for parkland as it needs to have a title search done before it can be considered to be converted into parkland. Let us hope that section of the Francis Place parcel can become parkland as it is habitat for threatened wildlife and particularly a species that can live for 100 years if left undisturbed ( according to the Audubon Field Guide ).
